Who raised you, and what do you remember most about them?
My mother, mostly — my father worked away a lot when I was small. She had this way of making a Tuesday feel like an occasion. I remember the kitchen always smelled of bread, and she'd let me stand on a chair to stir, even when I made a mess of it.
What did your childhood home look like?
A little stone cottage with a garden out front my mother was fiercely proud of. Nothing grand, but it was warm, and it was ours.
What's one piece of advice you'd give a great-grandchild you'll never meet?
Don't wait for the right moment to be kind to someone — there usually
isn't one, you just have to do it anyway. And write things down. I wish I had, more than I did.
