Questions people ask.

Fifteen to start — a first pass across everything, from Barry. Nothing here is final; it'll get trimmed and reworded as real questions come in during the beta.

Getting started

Is it really as simple as handing someone the phone?

Yes — that's the whole point. Once you've added the person you're interviewing, the record screen shows one warm question at a time with a single big button underneath it. A grandchild can run the whole thing without any explanation.

Do we need to be in the same room, or can this work over a call?

Either works. Sit together in person and pass the phone back and forth, or prop it up on a video call — whatever's actually going to happen is what matters, not how it's set up.

What if we just want to record something that comes up naturally, not answer a set question?

That's "Capture a chat" — a button that sits in the same spot the questions do. Tap it, record whatever's being said, and add a quick note afterwards if you want (or skip that and add one later). It doesn't touch your progress through the question decks at all.

Does the person being interviewed need to be tech-savvy, or have their own smartphone?

No — they don't need to touch the app at all if that's easier. Someone else adds them as an interviewee and holds the phone or laptop; the person being interviewed just talks.

Privacy & security

Who can actually listen to the recordings — can you (Barry), or In My Time?

No. Your family recordings and memories are private to your family circle. They are stored with bank-grade encryption at rest and strictly restricted to you and the family members you explicitly invite. We never listen to, sell, or mine your recordings, and we never use your family’s stories to train advertising or public AI models.

How are our family recordings and stories protected?

All audio recordings, photos, and transcripts are protected with industry-standard AES-256 encryption at rest and TLS 1.3 encryption in transit. Your family archive lives in an isolated, secure vault. Only authenticated members of your family group can access and play them.

Where is the Managed storage physically recorded and hosted?

Your recordings and photos are stored in Cloudflare R2 object storage, hosted in highly secure European data centers. Cloudflare R2 provides enterprise-grade durability, geographic redundancy, and continuous protection. Because it complies fully with GDPR European privacy laws, your family heirloom remains safeguarded under the world’s strongest data protection standards.

Where is our database located and what information is kept there?

Our application database is powered by Neon Serverless PostgreSQL, hosted in European cloud facilities (AWS Europe) and accessed strictly via encrypted SSL/TLS connections. The database stores your interview structure: question prompts, timestamps, recording durations, and family access permissions. Your family data is never made public or indexed by search engines.

Do I need a password? What happens if I lose my phone?

You sign in securely with your Google or Apple account (or email magic link). Because your account is protected by industry-standard biometric authentication (Face ID, Touch ID, and two-factor authentication), you never have to remember a separate password, and you will never lose your family memories if you clear your browser cache or switch phones. Simply sign in on any device and your family archive is immediately ready.

What if the person being interviewed wants to stop, or says something they'd rather not keep?

They're in control at every step — recording only starts when someone taps the button, and nothing is saved until it's actually stopped and confirmed. If a clip shouldn't have been kept, come back and delete it from the answer screen.

Family & reporters

Can more than one family member help ask the questions?

Yes — invite as many reporters as you like from the ☰ menu. Each gets their own private link, can record and add notes just like you can, and you'll see who recorded what on each interviewee's card.

What if a brother and sister both want to interview the same parent — can we both take part?

Today, yes, as long as one of you sets the interviewee up and invites the other as a reporter using that same "get the help of more reporters" link — you'll both be able to record, add notes, and see everything. What doesn't work yet is joining two people's already-separate accounts together after the fact; that's next on the list.

Can I edit or add a note to a recording after I've made it?

Yes. Every recording — question answers and "Capture a chat" moments alike — has an editable title/note you can add or change any time from the record screen, not just right after you record it.

Storage & subscription

How much does StoryCatcher cost?

Every family starts with 30 free minutes of voice recording and full access to all question decks. When you want to record more, you can continue with a modest annual subscription of €25 per year for 3 hours of recording time. This annual subscription applies equally irrespective of whether you keep recordings in our zero-knowledge Managed Storage or connect your own Google Drive for local custody.

Are all question decks included?

Yes! All question decks across all themes are completely free and unlocked from day one.

Where are the recordings stored?

By default they live in In My Time's zero-knowledge encrypted Managed Storage (hosted in Cloudflare R2 object storage in European data centers). If you'd rather keep them in your own Google Drive, connect it from the ☰ menu at any time.

What happens if my subscription lapses?

We provide a 5-Year Memory Preservation Guarantee. We will never delete your family's precious voices. Your existing recordings remain securely stored, playable, and exportable for at least 5 years even if you pause your subscription.

What is a sponsorship voucher code?

Sponsors, care organisations, and family partners can provide gift or grant vouchers covering a full year of StoryCatcher. If you have a voucher link or code, you can activate it instantly with no credit card required.

What permissions does Storycatcher ask for when I connect Google Drive?

We request only the minimal Google 'drive.file' permission. Storycatcher can ONLY create, read, and manage the specific recordings it saves inside a dedicated 'Storycatcher Recordings' folder. It can never see, read, modify, or delete any other files, photos, or documents on your Google Drive.

Can I switch between Managed storage and Google Drive later?

Yes. From 'Your own storage' in the ☰ menu, you can toggle any person's storage destination between Managed storage and Google Drive at any time. When you disconnect Google Drive, active storage defaults safely back to Managed storage.

What's next

Can I download my recordings, or take them with me?

Downloading individual recordings already works from the answer screen. A single "export everything" option is on the list but isn't built yet.

Will there be video, or a written transcript?

Both are planned but not live yet — today StoryCatcher captures audio only. When either ships, it'll be an option on recordings you've already made, not something you have to start over for.
